Some cities offer free parking throughout the city or in certain areas during the month of August. “This was the case with Paris, for years parking was free in August. But since last year, it’s over ”, explains Maître Jean-Baptiste Le Dall. But is it still free in other big cities?

Parking in town, case by case
“There is no general rule. Each municipality sets, according to a decree, its own parking rules, prices or freebies. In Lyon, for example, like every year from August 1 to 31, the majority of regulated parking spaces are free. But beware, some places remain chargeable. The rules also change, depending on whether or not you hold a resident card ”, adds Maître Le Dall.
In Grenoble, the rule of free parking during the first half of August ended in 2017.

Some cities are becoming pedestrian
In other cities, such as Strasbourg, we take advantage of the summer to experience the pedestrianization of part of the city center. Parking is therefore prohibited in this zone. Around 14,100 paid spaces remain available as well as 10,000 in public parking.
So-called “relay parking” spaces are also available to tram or bus users. But here, as in other cities, free parking spaces have disappeared.

How to find out about the regulations in force?
“When in doubt, it’s best to learn about street parking rules. In some cities, free admission is indicated on parking meters. But by using the parking payment applications on your smartphone, you will be informed with geolocation, explains Maître Le Dall. Plus, if you get back to your vehicle faster than expected, you will only pay for the time actually consumed. ”
