Riga’s 822nd Birthday Celebration: Concerts, Performances, and Festivities in Old Riga

On August 19, the capital will celebrate Riga’s 822nd birthday, when various events will take place throughout the day, concerts will be played, circus and theater performances will be held for children, and there will be a contest for the tastiest cake. On the night before the celebration, August 18, a concert program and a special audiovisual performance will be played in Lucavsala.

On August 19, a magnificent celebration will take place in Old Riga. Residents and guests of the city are invited to participate in the rich program of various cultural and artistic performances, concerts and activities, which will be suitable for all ages.

Conversations of courage in the Town Hall Square

The opening of Riga’s birthday will take place in the Town Hall Square, which will be transformed into Courage Square, where the courage talks will be led by journalist Kristīne Garklāva, and congratulations will be heard from Riga’s multinational communities and the sister city of Tartu – the 2024 European Capital of Culture. At the end of the day, singing will take place in Latvian and Ukrainian together with the “Maska” choir.

Celebrations in Dome Square

On Dome Square, you will be able to attend several concerts, in which both Latvian artists and foreign guests will take the festive stage. The winners of the 2022 “Eurovision” song contest – the group “Kalush Orchestra” from Ukraine – will be the first to open the festive concert. After that, such popular groups in Latvia as “The Sound Poets” and “Carnival youth” will take the festive stage, and a contest for the tastiest cake will take place.

The cultural program of the holiday will be magnificently concluded in Dome Square by the concert performance “Songs of Courage and Joy”, which will be performed by well-known and popular musicians: Miķelis Putniņš, “Maska” choir, Gustavo, Aija Andrejeva, Ieva Akuratere, Kristīne Pāže, Ilona Bagele, Daumants Kalniņš and Jānis Apeinis .

Festive program for children in the Dom garden and at the foot of the Dom church

Various activities for children will take place in Old Riga, Doma garden – creative workshops, theater performances for different ages, concerts.

The program will be opened by the theater show “Lemonade”, intended for children from the age of three, while the smallest visitors to the festival will be able to listen to the concert “A baby in ears, listening to music”. Children from the age of four are invited to attend the performance “Poop and Spring”, followed by the performance for young people “Full Time”.

Throughout the day from 14.00 until At 20.00, the little festival visitors will be able to participate in children’s workshops, Joy marches and bubble activities at the foot of the Dome Church.

Jazz and classical music scene on Smilšu Street

This year, Smilšu iela will turn into an exciting stage of jazz and classical music, where both local talents and world-renowned musicians will gather. Various concerts for different tastes are planned for the event.

On the stage of jazz and classical music, the groups “PSPMS”, “MASA” will perform with musicians Rudolph Macat, Kārli Auzina, Ivar Arutjunjana and Elina Silova. The program of the event also includes a concert by the Polish group “Zubek & Pentz Piazzolla Duo”, performances by the group “Viral Mind” and artists from Ukraine Olga Lukachova together with the group “Funk Reunion” will take the stage.

The concert program will be embellished by the concert of the “Ladies and Cinema” group, in which Inga Šlubovska, Dita Krenberga, Inga Ozola, Ilze Ozoliņa will perform. Indian classical music association “Chaturveni” will complement the concert program.

The scene of fun and jokes in Livu Square

There will be a fun and joke area in Livu Square, where there will be joke sports games with the participation of visitors, a competition for the worst jokes, mini-golf, circus performances and a concert by the “Mazais princis” group.

Kristīne Brīniņa’s performance “Have we met before?” will be held in the Riga city center at different times and places, which will be suitable for every viewer, anywhere and at any time. There will also be several circus performances with artists from Spain, Argentina, Belgium and the Netherlands.
