The mixed choir of Riga Stradins University (RSU) has returned home with a golden diploma and a golden angel statuette Rigawhich participated in the XII Krakow Advent and Christmas Choir Competition in Poland at the beginning of December and won the mixed choir category.
The competition took place in St. Peter and Paul Church in the Old Town of Krakow. Choirs competed in four categories – mixed choirs, men’s and women’s choirs, youth choirs and chamber choir groups – performing repertoire suitable for Advent and Christmas. In the category of mixed choirs, competing with four other choirs, the RSU choir Riga under the leadership of conductors Zane Zilberte and Evita Taranda, earned the highest evaluation of the jury, receiving a gold diploma and a golden angel statuette. Choir Riga the performance featured compositions by Ilona Rupaine, Erik Ešenvald, Marħer Zariņš and Canadian composer Don McDonald.

Eighteen collectives from Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Croatia, Iceland, Denmark and Norway participated in the competition, including the women’s choir of Riga Technical University Delta. The performance of the participants was evaluated by a jury consisting of experienced musicians from Estonia, Macedonia, the Czech Republic, Italy and Poland.
In addition to the competition program, the choir Riga also participated in the concert of the contestants, performing several pieces in a festive mood.
Participation in international competitions is a valuable experience for the choir, which helps improve vocal skills, get to know other nations’ choral singing culture and motivate singers for further creative work. Conductor Z. Zilberte tells about what she experienced at the competition: “This was the first international competition for the choir after the pandemic. Of course, it was worrying, but also a very good and positively charged feeling. Everyone played music with great dedication. Both the competition and concert performances were strong and emotional. It is a great pleasure and satisfaction that it was highly appreciated by both the jury and the audience. The acoustics of the church, the mood of Advent and the snow-white beauty of Krakow were inspiring.”
