Riga Stradins University: A Growing Attraction for Foreign Students Seeking Medical and Dental Education

“I decided to study in Latvia, because I was actually born here. I wanted to reconnect with my roots, so I decided to come back here and study medicine,” says RSU Faculty of Medicine graduate Tatjana Afraimovića.

Her future plans do not include staying in Latvia.

“I will go back home because my family is there. I will go there at the end of the month. I have to pass the license in Israel, but this is a requirement when returning from any European university, not only from Latvia. In other European countries, Latvian education is also suitable. In Israel, I have to take an additional test, but the education is recognized,” explains Afraimovica.

Nathaniel from Sweden has graduated from the Faculty of Dentistry, admits that education in Latvia is much cheaper and appreciates the opportunity offered here to work practically at an earlier stage of studies.

“I studied at the Faculty of Dentistry, and compared to other countries, such as Spain or Poland, we had the opportunity to work practically with patients already in the first years of study. Latvia is the closest to my home in Sweden. It was very easy to go there and back, it’s 55 minutes by plane. I had heard very good reviews about Riga Stradins University,” says Nataniels Levins, a graduate of the Faculty of Dentistry of RSU.

On the other hand, the young doctor from India got here by accident, he had never heard anything about Latvia before.

“It was a game of chance. I didn’t know anything about Latvia before I came here. I searched on the Internet, and Latvia looked like a very promising opportunity, especially for medical studies in English,” says Nityanand Jains, a graduate of the Faculty of Medicine of RSU.

Nityanand is not yet sure about his future plans. Will remain in Latvia for now. When he returns to India, he will have to take an exam so that the education he received in Latvia is recognized even when he works there.

“I don’t know, for now I’m staying here because I also work as a teacher. So I will stay here to teach biostatistics, but after that I will look for more clinical, research-based opportunities,” reveals Nityanand.

Since 2019, the number of foreign students at Riga Stradins University has increased by 30% and is approaching three thousand. The most foreign students are from Sweden, Germany, Finland, Norway and Italy.
