Riga IFF 2023: Winners, Awards, and Highlights of the Tenth Season

In the tenth season of “Riga IFF”, 84 cinematographic works were submitted to the evaluation of juries – foreign and local industry experts – and were eligible for festival awards and special prizes from festival supporters in seven categories. For the first time in the history of the festival, not only the creators of the nominated films, jury representatives and industry professionals, but also festival visitors gathered at the in-person award ceremony in the main venue of the festival, the “Splendid Palace” cinema.

Director Tia Kouvo’s comedy “Family Time” was recognized as the winner of the 2023 “Riga IFF” Feature Competition, which received a cash prize worth 4,000 euros and the main prize of the festival – a golden rooster. The documentary film “Smoke Sauna Sisterhood” by Estonian director Anna Hints received special recognition from experts.

Barbara Rupika’s fable “Such Miracles Do Happen” brought to life in the tradition of surrealism and conviction of animism received the main award and a cash prize of 2,000 euros at the International Short Film Festival Competition. The jury has expressed special appreciation for Julián García Long’s experimental short film “The Despair of Monkeys”.

On the other hand, the animation short film “Gruzis” by director Ilze Ances Kazakas became the winner of the national competition and received a specially designed statuette and a cash prize of 1000 euros. Sarlota Virri’s short film “In The Midst Of Chaos There Was Shape” has been nominated for the prestigious European Film Academy Award “European Short Film 2023”.

The video clip for the song “Imposer” by the group “The Lou Lous” created by director Carlos Lesmes was chosen as the winning clip in the Baltic music video competition. The author of the video clip received a festival award and a monetary bonus worth 1000 EUR.

The laureates have also been announced within the “Riga IFF Forum” industry section of the festival. Martinus Klemet’s animated short film “Yummy” was recognized as the winner of the “Short Riga Test Screenings” festival and the recipient of the “BBPosthouse” award – post-production services worth 5,000 euros. The jury has given special recognition to the animation project “Free Descent” by Edmund Jansons. Among the full-length film and multi-episode projects presented within the “Riga IFF Showcase”, the international jury chose Jan Gebert’s project “Europa” as the winner, which received a 5,000 euro cash prize from the main partner of the festival, the media and technology company “Tet”.

“Riga IFF” representatives note that the celebration of the event’s tenth season will continue until the evening of October 22 – on Sunday, internationally recognized and award-winning cinematographic works will be shown on the screens of “Splendid Palace” and “Forum Cinemas”. Also, some of the “Riga IFF” films can be watched on the online platform “online.rigaiff.lv” (in the territory of Latvia) until October 22 at 11:59 p.m.

The main partner of “Riga IFF” is the media and technology company “Tet”. The festival is created with the support of the State Cultural Capital Fund, the EU program “Creative Europe – MEDIA”, the Riga City Council and the National Cinema Center.
