Riga City Council will focus more actively on improving the urban environment Press release

November 23, 2020

The information was prepared by Mārtiņš Vilemsons, Project Coordinator of the Public Relations Department of the Riga City Council.

On Monday, November 23, the City Development Committee of the Riga City Council decided to establish three commissions for work on issues of public outdoor space, neighborhood development and cultural and historical material heritage.

Council members will work in the commissions without additional remuneration, inviting relevant specialists. Meetings will have to take place at least once a month. The Commission’s decisions will be of an advisory nature.

Inese Andersone, Chairwoman of the City Development Committee, points out that so far the responsibility for public outdoor space in Riga City Council has been fragmentary, therefore a separate commission needs to be established to speed up the resolution of these issues. “After all, no one has really been responsible for what Riga looks like. That’s why we have a jagged Esplanade, a sloping, crooked forecourt in the Daile Theater, terrible trash at stops and non-existent amenities in the neighborhood. such an important part of the city is not neglected, “explains I. Andersone. It is planned that this commission will be chaired by MP Alija Turlaja.

Speaking about the neighborhoods, the chairwoman of the City Development Committee notes that Āgenskalns has not had its own library for several years, in Jaunciems there is only one bench and the same stop, in Dārzciems, the street coverage under each criticism. “Each neighborhood has its own needs – both those that can be resolved quickly and those that require more budget and planning. In order to listen to the needs of the neighborhoods and pass them on to the executive, we will organize a Neighborhood Development Commission,” says Andersone. It is planned that this commission will be chaired by Deputy Kaspars Spunde.

I. Andersone also emphasizes that issues related to cultural and material material heritage must be actively addressed. “Riga is an ancient city with a rich cultural and historical heritage. Unfortunately, part of this heritage dies, because the formation of Harmony / GKR was not interested in taking care of these places. For example, Daugavgriva fortress is like a foggy, forgotten brooch. with the park and the architecture of wooden buildings throughout the city. The task of this commission is to identify and strategically work with the cultural and historical material heritage of Riga so that it can be preserved and opened to the public, “the chairwoman of the City Development Committee points out. It is planned that this commission will be chaired by deputy Rita Eva Našeniece.
