The joint candidacy of Riga and Tampere is the only candidate for the 2023 World Hockey Championship, reports the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF).
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in April deprived Russia of the right to host the 2023 World Hockey Championships in St. Petersburg.
Hungary and Slovenia have withdrawn their joint candidacy, so Riga and Tampere are no longer competitors for the championship. The organizers of the next championship will be confirmed at the upcoming IIHF Congress this week.
It is planned that one subgroup match and two quarter-final fights will take place in Riga, while Tampere will host the second subgroup and other playoff games.
The elite division world championship also took place in Riga in 2006 and 2021.
