Rifka Lodeizen would rather not be photographed without make-up, she says on Friday De Volkskrant. The 48-year-old actress explains that she feels protected by make-up.
“My face has a certain transparency,” says Lodeizen. “It is very easy to look inside me. That makes me suitable for camera acting, but with photos you quickly see that I am nervous or uncomfortable. Make-up helps, it is a kind of mask.”
The three-time Golden Calf winner, known from the series, among other things Judas in Dear mum, indicates that someone her age is less beautiful in photos. “While I have to sell myself, I am a bit of my own product. Apparently I am afraid that a bad photo could harm my career prospects. That one casting director or producer thinks: well, he has had her day. The film industry. ‘I’m switching away from white man drama’
“That is another reason why it is important that a generation of writers, directors and producers are now emerging who will create fantastic female roles for women aged 40 to 80,” says Lodeizen. “Especially for the female viewers, by the way, because they want to recognize themselves in films and series. I am no longer interested in white man drama myself. I just zap away from that.”
In the meantime, Lodeizen recognizes that there is more and better work nowadays. “As an actress I think I also have my time. There are more and more good, interesting roles for women of my age.”
Partly for this reason, Lodeizen feels happier than when she was 28. “At that age your career has yet to take off, you still had to find your dream man, were you going to have children or not? Would it all work out? It was all still very uncertain. I wouldn’t want to go back to that.”
