Ridouan Taghi denies talking to his cousin, who is in prison in Morocco. Taghi’s lawyer, who deals with detention-related topics, reports this.
Taghi’s denial comes in response to a commission that ruled in a ruling this month that there was unauthorized contact between Taghi and his cousin last year. The committee in question is the Appeals Committee of the Council for the Administration of Criminal Justice and Youth Protection (RSJ).
“The fact that the client called his mother at a time when his sister was apparently talking to the cousin is a coincidence and – in view of the direction and supervision from the PI Vught – cannot be planned as such,” says lawyer Thomas van der Horst against the news agency on Sunday ANP.
It is about a telephone conversation that Taghi had with his mother from the extra-secure institution (ebi) in Vught last year. At that time, his sister was also present with Taghi’s mother, who spoke to her son who is detained in Morocco.
The nephew is said to be part of Taghi’s criminal organization. “The appeals committee considers it sufficiently plausible that the detainee was given the opportunity to have contact with his cousin through his mother and sister,” the RSJ’s ruling states. “His cousin is not an authorized contact.”

‘Due to contact, Taghi has not had contact with mother for years’
Due to the unauthorized contact, Taghi’s regime in the ebi has been strengthened. According to Van der Horst, this has meant that “to date, so for a year now, the client is no longer allowed to have contact with his mother”.
“There is therefore no fair treatment of his complaint(s)”, Van der Horst adds.
In a conversation report that Van der Horst shared with the ANP, it says his mother tells Taghi that his sister is talking to cousin Jaouad. Taghi asks how he is and tells his mother that he is not allowed to hear anyone else. “Give him my best regards. May Allah set him free soon,” says Taghi in the partly blackened report.
Marengo trial will resume on Monday
There are currently dozens of cases and procedures about the conditions under which Taghi is detained, says Van der Horst. On Monday, a complaint will be dealt with, among other things, about the extension of a ban on calling people abroad. “As a result, the client has not spoken to his (minor) children since September 2022.”
Taghi is the main suspect in the extensive Marengo liquidation process, which will resume on Monday. A life sentence has been demanded against him. Last month his lawyer Inez Weski was arrested. She’s still stuck. The 68-year-old counselor is suspected of sharing Taghi’s information from the EBI with his contacts in the outside world.
Taghi has indicated that he will conduct his own defense for the time being, until new lawyers have come forward in due course.
