Riders back on the track: ‘Safer than without brakes on the road’

For the track cyclists, the corona crisis has had relatively little impact on their program. They are working towards a new season and the preparation for it usually started only two weeks ago.

The first serious event is the European Championship in mid-October and the highlight must be the Olympic Games in Tokyo next year. The Netherlands can win big with world top players such as Lavreysen, Jeffrey Hoogland and Kirsten Wild.

Because the race calendar remains empty for the time being, national coach Hugo Haak is thinking of a match day in Omnisport. His riders then have to take turns driving a kilometer time: “I want to give them an incentive to race.”

Hoogland took to the road with a track bike

Hoogland is also very happy to be back on the track. “That is a lot safer. A track bike has no brakes, but I took it on the road anyway.”

He continues: “There were almost a few crashes. Of course, a motorist does not expect a cyclist to arrive at sixty an hour without brakes. But yes, I had to do something.”
