Ridderkerks Dagblad | ‘Many patients with weak immune systems are unprotected by vaccines’

About half a million patients in the Netherlands with a weakened or disrupted immune system are not or insufficiently protected by corona vaccines. That is one of the conclusions of a study by, among others, UMC Groningen, Erasmus MC, UMC Utrecht and ZonMw, a funder of research in health care. A third or fourth injection may be able to offer a solution for these patients, but this has yet to be investigated.

“It seems that among kidney and lung transplant patients there are many people who are not well protected after vaccination. The same applies to patients who have a severe immune disorder. There are also patients with blood disease who may not be protected,” says research coordinator Daniel Warmerdam.

According to the researchers, patients on dialysis and certain patients who are not yet using immunosuppressive medication may be well protected by vaccinations. “The positive thing is that a number of groups are protected, but there are also a lot of people who do not respond well to vaccination,” said Warmerdam.

Several research centers started studies into the effect of vaccinations in patients with a weakened immune system at the beginning of this year. The studies are part of the ZonMw research program Covid-19, intended to investigate the consequences of the corona virus.
