Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Everyone has dreams of winning the lottery and becoming rich overnight. But it turns out that this really happened to a pedicab driver who suddenly became rich because he won the lottery.
Because he wanted to change his destiny and make his family happy, Sayat (72) tried his luck by buying a lottery ticket.
That lottery coupon is a Rewarded Social Philanthropy Grant (SDSB). Since January 1 1989, the SDSB is a lottery coupon held by the government.
People can buy coupons from IDR 1,000 to tens of thousands. In the future, the government will use the lottery money for development capital.
In return, the government provides awards of billions of rupiah that are set based on the transfer of shopping coupons. Of course, with very little chance of winning.
Sayat sees these coupons as a way to break the poverty trap. Almost every week he buys lottery tickets hoping to get IDR 1 billion.
Unfortunately, the coupons he bought never met the government’s requirements. Until finally, a miracle happened on Wednesday, May 9, 1990.
Exactly at 23.30, Sayat played the radio that could announce the winner of the SDSB. He also listened carefully to the announcer saying the winning numbers for the lottery coupons.
“Eight, four, nine, three, seven… and finally nine!” said the announcer, quoted by Waspada daily (17 May 1990).
When the announcer said the last number, Sayat was immediately surprised. Apparently, all the numbers matched the coupon he had. This means that Sayat legally received IDR 1 billion from the government.
“This crippled old man came out of his reed-walled house to bow down and kiss the earth in his garden,” wrote a reporter for the daily Waspada.
The woman burst into tears. What had always been a dream came true in the middle of the night.
The next day, Sayat reported the victory to the relevant parties. After that, the whole city of Magelang was excited because a pedicab driver suddenly became a billionaire.
In 1990, IDR 1 billion was very large. House prices in the elite area of Pondok Indah, Jakarta, alone reach IDR 80 million per unit. This means that with IDR 1 billion, Sayat can buy 12 housing units in Pondok Indah.
Then, the price of gold in 1990 was only IDR 20 thousand per gram. With IDR 1 billion, Sayat can buy 50 kg of gold. This means that if it is converted by equalizing the price of gold (1 gram: Rp. 1 million), it is known that Rp 1 billion is equal to Rp 50 billion today.
Billions of money will be given directly by the Minister of Politics, Law and Human Rights, Sudomo, in Jakarta. Fortunately, Sayat is smart about investing and chooses not to waste her money.
To Waspada, he said he would use half the money to put in a deposit. At the same time, the rest will be used to buy a house and living capital for their children.
He also said that he would no longer be involved in SDSB. After all, he is already a billionaire. As a result, he chose to focus on worship, building a mosque, and caring for his children and grandchildren until death.
Nevertheless, Sayat’s story cannot be an example because SDSB is no different from gambling today. However, at that time the SDSB was legalized by the government through the Ministry of Social Affairs.
Ultimately, there were no more stories like Sayat’s as the SDSB was dismissed in 1993.
