Richard Golz and his son Jakob at SC Freiburg – football

Richard Golz has been in SC Freiburg for eight years. On Sunday he is a guest in the studio of SWR Sport. Son Jakob Golz is now a professional goalkeeper for RW Essen and will be a guest of the 3rd division at SC Freiburg II on Sunday.

The reunion will certainly be warm, perhaps a little melancholy. When Richard Golz enters the venerable Dreisam Stadium on Sunday, many memories of eight exciting years spent in the club’s goal will be awakened. 246 games, the UEFA Cup, promotion and relegation to the Bundesliga.

Son Jakob Golz plays against SC Freiburg II

Richard Golz, now 54, is visiting Freiburg again on Sunday, combining his Black Forest holiday with a flying visit to his old workplace. Logically no longer as a player, but as a spectator. And as a father: because his son Jakob is in goal for the third division team Rot-Weiss Essen. And the Essen, in turn, will play SC Freiburg II at the Dreisamstadion from 2pm.

The goalkeeper dynasty of father and son Golz

This means: after 16 years, a Golz is once again in a championship match in a Freiburg gate, albeit only as a guest for RWE. “It will certainly be exciting,” says Father Richard in an interview with SWR Sport about his emotional world and is looking forward to watching the game at his former foster home in Breisgau.

In the summer, Jakob Golz was promoted to 3rd league with the traditional club on the Hafenstraße in Essen. It was the long-awaited and euphorically celebrated return to professional football for Rot-Weiss.

And the talented junior Golz is now one of the best players on the team. “Whenever I can agree, I go to Jakob’s matches. I’m there as often as possible,” says father Richard Golz, who once took care of his son as a goalkeeper coach when he was young at Hamburger SV. And he is still sponsor and mentor today: “We talk after every game. And I’ll tell you if I notice something without attacking it with it.” With at least 453 Bundesliga matches in your baggage of experience, you can indulge in one or the other tip.

“Riechie-Richie shouts” from Freiburg fans

At 1.87 meters, Jakob Golz is not as tall as his father (1.99 meters), but the resemblance between the two is easy to see on their faces – this is Richard Golz’s son. In turn, after passing from the HSV to the Sport-Club between 1998 and 2006, he had become a true cult goalkeeper for Freiburg. Unforgettable were the shouts of “Richie, Richie” from the stands as the long goalkeeper entered the field or saved Volker Finke’s team from falling behind with his saves.

Honorary membership to SC Freiburg

Richard Golz was once even ‘Freiburg sportsman of the year’ and when he left the club he even received an ‘honorary membership’ from SC Freiburg from then-president Achim Stocker, who sadly passed away. A club he still feels very attached to and for which he wore the goalkeeper’s jersey of the traditional team several times a few years ago.

Vacation in the Black Forest, meeting with friends from Freiburg

The holidays in the Black Forest this week are so much better. “We are usually further north, mainly in the North Sea,” reveals Richard Golz, who now lives in Hamburg again and works as a personnel consultant, “but it’s really nice here too. You can also meet old friends from Freiburg.”

And you can wonderfully combine your time in the Southwest with a visit to SWR television: Sunday (from 9.50pm) Richard Golz will be a guest in the studio with presenter Lea Wagner on SWR Sport.
