Richard Dewitte: A Return to Justice

Singer Richard Dewitte, who made musical history with the hit “J’ai encore rêvé d’elle” in 1975 with the group Once Upon a Time, is once again facing justice. This time, he is accused of exchanging messages of a sexual nature with a minor and will have to answer for these acts before the criminal court of Meaux during a trial scheduled for September 18. Aged 77, Richard Dewitte is charged with two counts: “corruption of a minor by a person put in contact with the victim by an electronic communications network” and “sexual proposals made to a minor under 15 by an adult using an electronic means of communication and followed by meetings”.

Trapped by the Authorities

The scandal erupted when the singer was caught in the act of exchanging explicit messages with a teenager on a dating site. The exchanges quickly took a sexual turn. The teenager, claiming to be 13, arranged a date with Richard Dewitte in a parking lot. However, behind this screen was hiding a soldier from the Research Section of the Paris Gendarmerie. The latter trapped the musician by organizing this meeting, which led to his arrest. Following this, Richard Dewitte was remanded in custody on August 25. Although it was initially planned that he be judged in immediate appearance, he asked for a delay to prepare his defense in collaboration with his lawyer.

A Controversial Past

This is not the first time that Richard Dewitte has faced such problems. In 2019, he was sentenced to an 18-month suspended prison sentence by the Paris Court of Appeal for similar facts dating from 2015. At the time, he had already been trapped by gendarmes posing as a minor of 14 years old, which led to his conviction. This new affair further tarnishes the artist’s reputation and arouses indignation.
