One year after the disappearance of Ricardo Lagunes and Antonio Díaz and although the federal government is committed to finding them, there is no progress. The political will of the authorities has remained on paper, reported family members and lawyers who accompany them in monitoring the case.
The lawyer and human rights defender Ricardo Lagunes and the community leader of Aquila, Michoacán, Antonio Díaz, were working to prevent the expansion of the Ternium mining company’s exploration work in that area, when they disappeared.
Díaz in particular, sought the consensus of the inhabitants to have the representativeness of the community. That would give him dialogue with the company, explained lawyer Rita Robles.
On January 15, 2023, both activists were traveling aboard a pick-up truck, owned by Lagunes, which was located a few hours after contact with them was lost, in the border area of Michoacán and Colima. The vehicle had signs of having been shot, but to date there is not even an expert report, family members and litigants said.
They asked President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to report tomorrow, Monday, in his morning conference at the National Palace, on what his collaborators have reported to him and what concrete actions will be taken to locate the activists.
Michel Cervantes, another of the lawyers following up on the issue, indicated that three investigation folders were opened in the Colima and Michoacán prosecutor’s offices and one more in the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic. Later, the latter attracted the case and until now, it has been possible to reconstruct the route that Lagunes and Díaz followed until the moment before their disappearance.
There are two people detained and linked to the process. The investigation is in the intermediate stage, so there are still several months before any judicial resolution is given, he said.
