Riau Islands Province Beware of the Nipah Virus Threat from Malaysia

The name of the nipah virus comes from a village in Malaysia, Sungai Nipah.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, TANJUNGPINANG – The Riau Islands Provincial Health Office (Kepri) appealed to residents to be aware of threats nipah virus from neighboring Malaysia, especially since the two regions have direct borders.

Head of the Riau Islands Health Service Mohammad Bisri in Tanjungpinang, Sunday (31/1), said that the nipah virus was first discovered in 1998, during an outbreak in Malaysia.

The name of the nipah virus comes from a village in Malaysia, Sungai Nipah. This virus is known to infect pigs and to stop the spread of the disease millions of people died in 1999.

The virus has the potential to spread to Indonesia through brokers of pig farms and fruit-eating bats from Malaysia.

“Some research results show that there are fruit bats moving regularly from Peninsular Malaysia to Sumatra Island or through the illegal pig trade from Malaysia to Indonesia,” said Bisri.
