Tanjungpinang (ANTARA) – The Riau Islands Province Health Service (Dinkes) invites the public to recognize the risk factors that cause obesity in commemoration of World Obesity Day on March 4 2024.
“We are holding a number of activities to commemorate World Obesity Day, one of which is disseminating information about obesity to the public,” said Raja Dina Iswanti as Head of the P2P Disease Control and Division at the Riau Islands Health Service in Tanjungpinang, Tuesday.
Dina said that there are still many people in society, especially parents, who think obesity is funny or the current term is “gemoy”. Even though that is not true at all, because obesity is not a good condition.

According to him, obesity is a condition where a person has excess body fat, which can have a negative impact on health problems.
Obesity is also a type of disease, like fever, which must be managed, because in the future it will definitely cause complaints in sufferers.
“Excessive body proportions can certainly interfere with a person’s activities and reduce productivity. For example, when climbing stairs, knee joints hurt due to carrying excess body weight,” said Dina.
He said that to determine whether someone is obese or not, there can be two examination methods.
First, it can be measured by abdominal circumference. For male adult standards, if the abdominal circumference is more than 90 centimeters, it can be said to be obese. Meanwhile for women, if their stomach circumference is more than 80 centimeters, they are also considered obese.
The second examination, namely measuring body mass index or BMI. Measurements are made using body weight based on kilograms, then divided by height squared in meters. If the division results are in the range of 18-25, it means normal. If the division result is 25 -27 fat, and more than 27 is obese.

As for medical obesity factors, there are quite a lot. In general, these include genetic factors. From the research results, one obese parent will increase the risk of obese offspring by 40 to 50 percent. If two parents are obese, then 80 percent of offspring can also be obese.
Then, environmental factors currently do not really support people’s physical activity. For example, there is minimal space for pedestrians or bicycles, so more people ride motorbikes even though they are relatively short distances. The environment also influences obesity.
Next, unhealthy lifestyle factors. For example, a diet with unbalanced nutrition. Moreover, the presence of technology go food which triggers many people to order ready-to-eat food which is not necessarily guaranteed to be healthy.
“Lack of behavior or excessive sleep and stress can also trigger obesity,” said Dina.
Dina said that cases of obesity can be anticipated early, by implementing a healthy lifestyle, including getting enough sleep. The average good sleep duration for adults is 8-9 hours per day.
Then, try to be active in your daily life by avoiding laziness. Do regular exercise activities for 150 minutes a week or 30 minutes per day, for example walking, cycling or swimming.
Apart from that, avoid consuming unhealthy foods, such as foods high in sugar and salt calories. It’s best to eat food served by your family at home, which is usually healthier and of course meets the nutritional rules for health.
“The most feared health impact of obesity is that it disrupts blood pressure, which can trigger heart or blood vessel disease,” said Dina.
Based on the results of basic health research from the Indonesian Ministry of Health, obesity cases in the country continue to increase from 15 percent in 2013, to 25 percent in 2023.
