Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Novavax said its Covid-19 vaccine showed 90.4% effectiveness. These findings were found in all phase three clinical trials from the United States and Mexico involving nearly 30,000 volunteers.
The company also plans to apply for an emergency use authorization (EUA) to the Food and Drug Administration in the third quarter of 2021. If approved by the FDA, it will follow three other vaccines that have the same license, namely Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson.
In addition, the two-dose vaccine was found to be 100% effective in preventing moderate and severe disease. In addition, it is 93% effective on several variants, quoted from CNBC International, Monday (14/6/2021).
In his statement, Novavax’s President of Research and development, Dr. Gregory Glenn said the NVX-CoV2373 vaccine offers a tolerability and safety profile.
“These data show consistent and high efficacy (efficacy) reaffirming the vaccine’s ability to prevent Covid-19 amid the ongoing genetic evolution of the virus,” he said.
In 29,960 cases, there were 77 confirmed cases. With details, 63 cases were in the placebo group and 14 cases were in two doses of the vaccine, and showed an efficacy result of 90.4%.
The company also claims the vaccine is very well tolerated. The most common side effects are fatigue, headache, muscle aches, and pain at the injection site. Usually the effect only lasts 2-3 days.
According to Novavax, the vaccine also appears to be effective against a number of variants including the Alpha which was first identified in the UK. The company says about 65% of cases where sequence data is available is a variant of concern.
Meanwhile, the US already has more than enough vaccines to complete its entire citizen vaccine program. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data as of Sunday, more than 173 million Americans have had at least one dose of the shot.
It is possible that the US will donate doses of the vaccine from Novavax. The Biden government itself has committed to donate around 20 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, and J&J vaccines as well as 60 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine.
There are currently no countries that use the Novavax vaccine. However, last May, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, Siti Nadia Tarmizi, said that in June and July there would be another brand of vaccine used by Indonesia. Namely, Novavax and Pfizer vaccines.
