RI officially registers for BRICS Membership, Joining Strength with Russia-China

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Indonesia officially expressed its desire to join as a member of the BRICS bloc. This was expressed by Indonesia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs (Menlu) Sugiono at the BRICS Plus High Level Summit (Gathering) in Kazan, Russia.

Through Thursday’s announcement (24/10/2024), Indonesia’s process to join as a member of BRICS led by Russia has begun.

“Joining BRICS in Indonesia is an example of a free and active foreign policy. It does not mean that we join a certain camp, but that we actively participate in it all forum,” said Sugiono, who was announced on Friday (25/10/2024).

“We also see that the BRICS priorities are in line with the work program of the Red and White Cabinet, including those related to food and energy security, poverty eradication or resource development human,” he said.

In addition, Sugiono proposed several concrete measures to strengthen cooperation between BRICS and the Global South. At least three points are awarded. First, adhering to the right to sustainable development, where developing countries need a policy role, and developed countries must fulfill their commitments.

Second, support the reform of the multilateral system to make it more inclusive, representative and in line with current realities. International institutions must be strengthened and have adequate resources to fulfill their mandates.

Finally, it is a force for unity and solidarity among the countries of the Global South. It is felt that BRICS can act as a glue to strengthen cooperation between developing countries.

“We see that BRICS can be the right way to discuss and promote the common interests of the Global South,” said Sugiono. “However, we are also involved in other forums, as well as holding discussions with developed countries.”

Indonesia has previously been recognized as one of the 13 BRICS partner countries. Apart from Indonesia, the other 12 countries are Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.

BRICS participants themselves may not selectively engage and participate in BRICS affairs. They will continue to be partners in other international initiatives but without full commitment to the bloc.

The new BRICS partners have the potential to become full members in the future. But they were not appointed immediately for specific reasons known only to the bloc led by Vladimir Putin.

BRICS is an informal group whose members included Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. This group was first started in 2006 to discuss current global issues. Its membership was expanded in 2023 with the addition of Ethiopia, Iran, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
