Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
The territory of Indonesia has six volcano which is under the sea like a volcano in Tonga. The six mountains are located in central Indonesia and eastern Indonesia.
Two of them are said to have erupted and caused a tsunami like in Tonga. Here are the facts about 6 underwater mountains in Indonesia.
1. Banua Wuhu
The submarine volcano Banua Wuhu is located southwest of Mangehetang Island, Sangihe Islands, North Sulawesi.
Mount Banua Wuhu experienced changes in altitude for several times. In 1835, the mountain was 90 meters above sea level, and in November 1919 it was 12 meters above sea level.
Then in May 1935, this mountain was at the bottom of the sea. Then now the peak of Banua Wuhu is at a depth of 400 meters.
Banua Wuhu is one of the underwater mountains that once caused a tsunami in Indonesia.
2. Newer Church
The undersea volcano Nieuwerkerk is administratively located in the Central Maluku Regency, Maluku Province.
This mountain is a twin volcano under the sea. Between the two peaks there is a basin with a depth of 600 meters from peak II.
Mount Nieweurkerk I has a height of more than 1,900 meters, while Nieweurkerk II has a lower elevation of about 1,800 meters. Both peaks are at a depth of more than 2,200 meters.
3. Hubal
Mount Hobal is an underwater mountain that has also caused a tsunami in Indonesia. Administratively, this mountain is located in the eastern part of Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. The height of this mountain is still unknown.
According to data from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), before Mount Hobal erupted in the 1970s, its peak appeared above sea level at low tide.
When the tide occurs, the volcano sinks again. Several years ago when the sea water receded the peak was visible, but now when the water recedes the peak of the mountain is not visible, experts suspect that the peak has been eroded by sea waves.
The last eruption of this mountain occurred in 1999, when white smoke gusts out of the sea level as high as approximately 100 meters.
