The Republic of Indonesia’s Ministry of Health announced that Indonesia had entered the COVID-19 variant Kraken or XBB.1.5. This variant has recently sparked an increase in cases in many countries, including the United States.

The Kraken variant case was detected in a Polish citizen who arrived in East Kalimantan on January 7, 2023. The person concerned tested positive for COVID-19 on January 11, 2023.

Director of Disease Prevention and Control (P2P) of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia Maxi Rein Rondonuwu said that the foreigner who tested positive for COVID-19 for the Kraken variant had finished undergoing independent isolation.

“Asymptomatic condition, self-isolation and PCR test, finally negative,” explained Dr. Maxi when contacted detikcom Wednesday (25/1/2023).

It is not yet known how many close contacts the first case of the Kraken variant of COVID-19 had. Maxi emphasized that his party was conducting an epidemiological investigation.

“Detected January 11, 2023, close contacts are being sought by the Balikpapan Health Service and the Balikpapan KKP,” he said.
