RI alert! Monkeypox Virus Has Arrived in Neighboring Countries

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Australian government has found a case of monkey pox virus (MPXV) in the Melbourne area. This discovery is the first in the land of kangaroos.

In a statement, the patient is a man in his 30s. He recently visited England, where the virus was recently discovered.

The Victoria State Department of Health said the man developed symptoms on May 16. Currently, the man has been isolated and authorities are still investigating everyone who was in close contact with him.

“Passengers seated near the man on flight EY10 from London to Abu Dhabi on 14 May and flight EY462 from Abu Dhabi to Melbourne, which landed on Monday, were contacted to be alerted to monitor for symptoms,” Australian media report 9News.au said. Friday (20/5/2022).

Meanwhile, authorities in the State of New South Wales (NSW) also found indications of another resident who was exposed to monkeypox. The region, which includes the city of Sydney, said the residents had previously arrived from Europe.

Monkeypox is a disease that is endemic in Central or West Africa. But recently the virus has emerged in the UK, Spain, Portugal, the United States (US), Italy, Sweden, France and Canada.

As the name suggests, the virus originated from an infection in monkeys. Reporting from the CDC website, the virus is part of the Orthopoxvirus genus, which also harbors similar viruses, namely variola (which causes smallpox), vaccinia (used in making vaccines) and cowpox (cowpox virus).

Smallpox first attacked monkeys in 1958, at the monkey research laboratory in Copenhagen, Denmark. Meanwhile, the first human case of monkeypox was discovered in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Meanwhile, posted on the same page, Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said that this virus was not as contagious as Covid-19. A similar claim was also confirmed by a local infectious disease doctor.

“We would not advise anyone to postpone their travel plans, following the discovery of the virus in the UK and several European countries,” said Sutton

On the other hand, the World Health Organization (WHO) itself has said the symptoms of monkeypox are very similar to those seen in the past in smallpox patients. But clinically the disease is not too severe.

The global agency added that the disease could also be prevented with the regular smallpox vaccine. “It is transmitted to humans through close contact with infected people or animals,” the agency said.
