The housing located in this sector of the Chemistry Valley was destroyed by the metropolis, which decided to revegetate the space.
It is the most industrialized area of the Lyon metropolis. In Feyzin (Rhône), the Chemistry Valley causes explosion risks linked to factory activity. During the year 2023, 80 homes and businesses were bought by the metropolis of Lyon, then destroyed.
The community will revegetate this space by next winter: 50,000 trees will grow near the refinery. “Here, we are planting 10 hectares of forest in place of homes, shops or businesses which were close to the refinery,” says Pierre Athanaze, vice-president of the Lyon metropolis in charge of nature in the city.
The site already pinned by Dreal
“Until now, these areas had to be demolished and left fallow, which was unacceptable for the living environment. Losing the opportunity to revegetate would have been a real shame. We worked with state services to be authorized to plant”, develops the politician.
The Regional Directorate for the Environment, Planning and Housing (Dreal) had noted in particular in the area significant concentrations of “eternal pollutants”, also called PFAS or substances perfluoroalkylated.
The body had identified 15 sites in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, which discharge pollutants at levels justifying in-depth monitoring. 34 municipalities in the Rhône had filed a complaint for “endangering the lives of others”.
