Rhineland-Palatinate State Government Makes it Easier for Foreign Teachers to Work in Schools and Promotes Female Leadership

Mainz (dpa/lrs) – The Rhineland-Palatinate state government wants to pave the way for more foreign teachers to come to schools. “We are making it easier for foreign teachers to gain access to teaching while respecting and maintaining their qualifications,” said Education Minister Stefanie Hubig (SPD) to the German Press Agency.

In this way, the level of German can be improved even during the adaptation course to prepare for the exams. However, the following applies: “At the end, when you are finished, you should have the language level to be able to give lessons well in German.”

The numbers are so far manageable in the overall context of around 43,000 teachers. “For example, we now have almost 150 Ukrainians as teaching and support staff in schools,” reported Hubig. The foreign teachers bring different experiences and perspectives. “We always have to look at the quality and always make sure that they know the language well.”

A high level of training is also ensured for lateral or lateral entrants into the teaching profession. “We in Rhineland-Palatinate have always said: We do it with a sense of proportion in the areas where there is a shortage, and we always do it with high quality. That means that anyone who joins us laterally or laterally will also end up being employed as a civil servant,” said the education minister. In the end, they are not second-class teachers, but on an equal level.

Schools in Rhineland-Palatinate are also lacking headmasters, but according to the Education Minister, not to a very large extent. “We currently have 60 unfilled management positions. However, a number of them are in the process of being filled. With 1,627 schools, that is a number that we can handle,” said Hubig. “Being a school principal is tiring, it’s challenging, but it’s also great.”

The Minister of Education also wants to motivate more women to seek leadership positions in some types of schools. “We are specifically promoting more women in school management, especially at secondary schools. We have set up a mentoring program that has been very well received and has very good results.” Across all school types, around 60 percent of school leaders are female. However, at some secondary schools such as high schools or vocational schools, male principals are in the majority.
