The Rhein-Neckar Löwen are keeping up with leaders Füchse Berlin in the Handball Bundesliga (HBL). Meanwhile there were defeats for Göppingen and Stuttgart.
Thanks to a dominant second half, the Rhein-Neckar Löwen defeated TBV Lemgo Lippe. The Mannheim team won on Sunday with 37:28 (16:14) and thus secured second place in the table. The German national player Juri Knorr was Mannheim’s best thrower with eight goals, Uwe Gensheimer had six goals.
Knorr made no secret of his satisfaction with the improvement after the break: “The first half didn’t feel right, but after that we got straight into a run and managed to keep the energy level high. That sets us apart.”
Meanwhile, Frisch Auf Göppingen suffered a 26:30 (10:12) defeat at THW Kiel. Kiel made a lightning start to 7:1 (14th minute) in front of 9,803 spectators, but then lost their rhythm. At 18:18 (44th) another setback in the fight for the title threatened.
But THW, with which ex-national player Steffen Weinhold extended his contract by a year until the summer of 2024 before the game, tightened up again and was sure to achieve success. The best thrower for the winner was Sweden’s European champion Niclas Ekberg with ten goals. Eight goals from their Norwegian Kevin Gulliksen were not enough for the guests to prevent their sixth defeat in the past seven league games.
The players of TVB 1898 Stuttgart, who lost their away game at MT Melsungen with 26:33 (13:14), also had to leave the field as losers. Egon Hanusz scored a total of six goals, Adam Lönn and Patrick Zieker five each.
