When planning the squad for the mission to defend its title in the European League of Football (ELF), the reigning champion has so far only opted for a contract extension. All of the previous players that Rhein Fire presented for the coming season were already in the squad for the 2023 season. Until now.
Because on Thursday the franchise presented the first external access for head coach Jim Tomsula’s team via Instagram. Fabian Weitz will play for Rhein Fire in the 2024 ELF season. The linebacker played for the Centurions in Cologne last season and is now the first external addition. “I am pleased that I have now officially signed with the legendary Rhein Fire team. “I am ready to bring my passion, dedication and skills to the team and can’t wait to represent Rhein Fire and make history,” Weitz is quoted as saying.
The Cologne native started playing football for the Cologne Falcons at the age of twelve and moved to the Crododiles in 2014. Three years later, the young linebacker made his debut in the German Football League (GFL). In 2018 Weitz moved to the USA. There he played for the Bufallo Bulls, the University at Buffalo team, in NCAA Division 1 (National Collegiate Athletic Association). In four seasons, Weitz played 33 times for the Bulls.
When the Centurions brought the “Kölsche Jung” back to Germany and his hometown last July for the second half of the ELF season, sports director David Drane raved about Weitz: “He is one of the best European linebackers. He was an outstanding junior player during his time in Cologne and after playing five seasons in NCAA Division 1, he is like an additional American import for us on the field.”
Now Weitz, who was mainly used as an inside linebacker during his games in Cologne, is moving a few kilometers further north to the Rhein Fire. There he joins the other linebackers Marius Kensy and Flamur Simon, who have already signed for the coming season.
