“Hey mom – it’s me. This is my new cell phone number – I need money urgently!”. Such or similar messages currently end up in the inbox of many WhatsApp users – especially in the Rheinisch-Bergisch region. In the last two weeks alone, scammers have been successful with this scam three times and stole several thousand euros.
The most recent case happened on Tuesday: This time a 64-year-old Burscheiderin fell for the scam. She transferred 3,700 euros to her supposed daughter. In the two weeks before, a 74-year-old from Leichlingen and a 48-year-old from Bergisch Gladbach had already fallen victim to this scam.
The police are therefore appealing once again: If you receive a WhatsApp from supposed family members, check it and try to reach them on their known number. Also, you should never respond to requests for money.
