RGPH5: journalists trained in the dissemination of results

From March 27 to 30, 2023, the National Institute of Statistics (INSTAT) in collaboration with Paris 21 trained around thirty journalists on the dissemination of the results of the General Population and Housing Census (RGPH5). Intended to inform, guide and raise awareness on issues related to the census, the workshop aims in particular to improve the dissemination of the results of the RGPH5 to the general public.

While it produces data that is essential to understanding the issues facing populations, the dissemination and understanding of INSTAT data remain challenges to which the structure wishes to respond. And as vectors of information to the general public, journalists remain privileged allies.

Hence this initiative, to make statistics accessible to as many people as possible and in a common language. This dynamic with the men of the media, will facilitate access to statistics and their use by the population, because even if we have the impression that they are made only for the State, we make them daily use, assures Mr. Arouna Sougané, the Director General of INSTAT.

This is why he hopes that this is only a starting point and that “we will continue to walk together”.

During the 4-day workshop, journalists were equipped with key statistical concepts and the usefulness of official statistics. They were also made aware of how the communication of gender statistics can help create an environment more favorable to equality between men and women. Now committed to making available to journalists all the information necessary to understand the results of the RGPH5, INSTAT is thus preparing the publication of the results of its work, which it hopes will be understood by the beneficiaries, that is- i.e. the people.

Despite some difficulties during the census period, the State took full responsibility, explained the head of INSTAT. This major operation, which entered its active phase in June 2022 with the population count, is the fifth of its kind since its launch in 1976.

The results of the RGPH5 will be disseminated through 3 series of publications on demography, the economy and housing in May 2023.
