RFU President Dyukov Considers Changing Confederation Amid UEFA Suspension

RFU President Dyukov: “We can use the option to change the confederation, if not this year, then next”

President of the Russian Football Union (RFU) Alexander Dyukov stated that the option to change the confederation for the organization remains.

At a meeting on Wednesday, the RFU Executive Committee almost unanimously decided to remain in UEFA rather than move to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

— The issue of participation of national teams in official competitions was discussed at the executive committee. It is important for us that this situation is resolved as quickly as possible. At the moment there is some progress in relations with UEFA. In particular, our youth teams are allowed to compete in 2024.

Of course, we are not completely satisfied with the results of the negotiations. We have a certain time to make decisions. The option to change the confederation will not go away. This option exists. We can take advantage of this opportunity, if not this year, then next year.

But at the moment there is no guarantee of transition. We can leave UEFA, but there is no guarantee that we will be accepted into the AFC. There are countries that support us, but the transition itself will not be easy. The transition itself will not mean that we will automatically be able to take part in official matches.

For this to happen, for the transition to be guaranteed, the position and support of FIFA is very important to us. To do this, the ban on participation in qualifying for the World Championships must be lifted. Until this decision is canceled, we agreed to work in this direction,” the Match TV correspondent quotes Dyukov as saying.

At the end of February 2022, FIFA and UEFA suspended Russian national teams and clubs from participating in international tournaments due to the situation in Ukraine.
