In the Latvian football club RFS, Covid-19 has been diagnosed in three people, the club reports on Wednesday.
It has already been reported that on Tuesday, 16 positive cases of Covid-19 were detected in the Latvian football championship unit “Riga”.
The Riga club has informed the Latvian Football Federation (LFF) and the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (SPKC) that several Covid-19-infected footballers were in close contact with several footballers from another Premier League team.
Currently, there is a break in the national team and “Riga” played its last game so far on November 7. It has not been officially announced which team’s players the infected footballers have been in contact with, but it is known that several legionnaires of “Riga” and RFS units have very friendly ties outside of football.
Although RFS General Director Maris Verpakovskis pointed out in a conversation with LETA on Tuesday that all footballers who had been in contact with “Riga” players had negative tests, on Wednesday the results of repeated tests revealed three cases of illness.
RFS reports that it is working closely with the SPKC and will provide further comments at a later stage.
On Friday, the Latvian Football Super League meeting decided by a majority to support the proposal not to continue the Optibet Latvian Football Super League season due to the difficult situation in Covid-19, but this proposal was not accepted by the LFF on Monday.
Earlier, in a conversation with LETA, LFF Secretary General Edgars Pukinsks stated that on Tuesday the LFF will decide on the remaining part of the Optibet Premier League season, but the decision in this regard is not yet known.
The champion of the football super-league has not been determined yet, but one point is enough for the “Riga” team to secure the title in the remaining two games. RFS, which has to win the remaining three matches, has not lost hope for the title, hoping that “Riga” will not score.
The battle for bronze is also continuing – the third place team will play in the UEFA European Conference League next season. The team that will take part in the playoffs and the team that will leave the top league is not known for the two matches before the end of the season.
