On Saturday, in the 31st round match of the “Optibet” Latvian football superleague, RFS scored a 3:1 (2:0) victory over “Liepāja” at home, beating their opponents for the third time this season.

After less than nine minutes of play, Jānis Ikaunieks successfully executed a 11-meter penalty kick, which sent the ball into the bottom corner of the goal and put RFS in the lead.
14 minutes later, after a corner kick, Petrs Mareš doubled the advantage of the people of Riga and made it 2-0 with a long shot. At the end of the first half, the people of Riga could also score a third goal, while the people of Liepāja had not had any decent scoring opportunities.
At the beginning of the second half, Eduards Tidenbergs passed in the penalty area to Robert Meļķis, who beat the Riga goalkeeper Yevgeniņi Nerugal from close range and reduced the deficit of “Liepāja” to one accurate shot, however, in the 58th minute, Žiga Lipušček restored the two-goal advantage after an accurate header.
In two of the three previous meetings, the RFS unit was superior by 2:0 and 3:0, but in one game a draw was recorded (1:1).
“Auda” will host “Riga” today at 20:00 at the “Skonto” stadium in Riga.
On Friday, in the first match of the round, “Daugavpils” defeated the “Metta” team at home with the result 4:2, leaving the penultimate place and the relegation zone, in which the people of Riga have ended up.
On Sunday, Salaspils “Super Nova” will host “Jelgavu” at home, and “Tukums 2000″/”Telms” will play against “Valmiera” at home.
RFS leads the tournament table with 74 points in 31 matches, followed by “Riga” with the same number of points in 30 matches. “Auda” is third with 48 points, followed by “Valmiera” with 45 points and “Liepāja” with 43 points in 31 matches. “Jelgava” has collected 34 points in 30 games, “Daugavpilij” has 32 points in 31 matches, “Tukums 2000″/”Telms” have 31 points, Metta’s players have 30 points, but Salaspils “Super Nova”, which will end the championship in last place, has collected nine points.
In the previous season, for the first time in history, Valmiers became the champions, “Riga” won the silver, and “RFS” won the bronze, while “Auda” won the Latvian Cup.
The champion will be determined after 36 rounds played in four rounds. A total of 180 games will be held.
In the 2023 season, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system will be used for the first time in Latvia.
