Reykjanes Volcano Eruption in Iceland: Lava Spewing and International Travel Unaffected

Reykjanes

volcano Iceland spewing lava and ash from the bowels of the earth. Despite the disaster, Iceland admitted that it was fine.

Reporting from Channel News Asia On Wednesday (20/12/2023), the Icelandic government said it was unlikely that flights would be affected by the lava spewing. This statement was announced to reduce concerns about international travel that is still ongoing due to the volcanic eruption.

“The eruption does not pose a threat to life. There is no disruption to flights to and from Iceland and international flight corridors remain open,” a government statement said.

The eruption occurred Monday evening on the Reykjanes Peninsula in southwest Iceland. The eruption spewed lava and smoke more than 100m into the air, following weeks of intense seismic activity.

The government has the authority to evacuate nearly 4,000 residents of Grindavik City. However, they are still allowed to go home to check houses that are at risk of being affected by an earthquake.

The volcano erupted while residents were sleeping, Kristin Maria Birgisdottir was one of them. He was putting his children to sleep when the eruption occurred.

“I saw the eruption in a post, I thought it was a bad joke,” Birgisdottir said before being evacuated by the government.

If residents think this is bad, it’s a different story for tourists. This post about the eruption is considered a lifetime experience that is a shame to miss.

“Our BnB host sent us a message that the volcano had erupted. This was a once in a lifetime event for us so we didn’t want to miss it. It’s a bit far from here but you can still see the lava coming up, for us this is incredible,” said one tourist from the Netherlands.

The center of the eruption was about 30 km from Reykjavik, Keflavik International Airport was somewhat close from there but remained open. Forecasting service AccuWeather said this eruption was very different.

“Little or no volcanic ash being lifted into the atmosphere will not have an impact on flights,” said AccuMeather Chief Meteorologist Jon Porter.
