Revolutionizing the Industry: The Best and Worst CGI Movies

CGI stands for computer generated image and is the technology of computer graphics to enhance and bring to life realistic images that move through digital special effects.

This type of technology can be used to add to certain real movie scenes or make a movie solely with CGI. Within this department, designers have to take care of all the details from colors and lighting, to textures to erase that line of the imaginary and transform it into something that will look 100% real.

The best movies with CGI

This film is the most important in the history of CGI because it came out in 2009 and used CGI to combine a real film with this technology. At this time it was not believed possible to generate such real human movements with CGI, so the film impressed everyone, revolutionizing the industry.

George Lucas was one of the pioneers of visual effects and they remain impressive to this day. Lucas used it to give life to objects, creatures and characters that would be almost impossible to create with makeup effects alone.

It was highly recognized in 2012, winning awards such as Best Visual Effects at the Oscars, precisely because the composition and animation within the film has an extremely delicate but beautiful artistic touch.

At first this was just James Cameron’s personal project, but then he took the time to write the script and waited for the studio to have the necessary technology to do it properly.

To make this film, the Paramount studio had to partner with Industrial Light & Magic to give the autobots the most realistic design possible, where each animated motion frame took 38 hours.

The worst movies with CGI

Now, as there are some very good CGI movies, there are also some that have terrible CG special effects. So let’s talk about some cases.

The CGI of this film was so bad and low quality that the director and star, Ryan Reynolds years later made fun of it in Deadpool where he is the main character.

This was due to the fact that since their budget was cut, the computer visual effects had to be done between 30 different companies, so there was no clear format, that is, not everyone was on the same line and thus it became very complicated to have a structure making the Lantern suit look very fake.

The CGI of this film lacked polishing and checking several details so they looked very bad, for example Dwayne Johnson, played the Scorpion King, but he was fully animated with CGI and the technology was not ready for a human with half the body of a scorpion looked good and real.

The CGI in this film made it distracting to viewers because it looked very fake and often unnecessary.

This film with director Joss Whedon where several scenes created with CGI were terrible such as Superman’s race against the Flash looked extremely blurry, just as they tried to remove Henry Cavill’s mustache, which made his face look horrible.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Within this film the CGI for the animals and aliens looked very bad. Just like when he is inside a warehouse and there is going to be a nuclear explosion, he goes into a lead refrigerator to save himself, but this looks very false with the CGI in the final shot.
