The physical signs of a cardiovascular accident can now also be detected with the help of an application developed by American researchers.
The mobile phone application was developed by UCLA researchers and is used by doctors to detect patients’ facial asymmetry, arm weakness and speech changes – all classic signs of a stroke, reports 360.medical.
To detect arm weakness, the researchers used data provided by mechanisms already present in any smartphone. So they collected information from the device’s standard internal 3D accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer.
To assess facial asymmetry, the study authors used machine learning to analyze 68 facial landmark points.
For speech defects, they used a sound recognition method that translates sound waves into images to note the differences between normal and stroke-specific speech.
The app is not yet available to the general public, but researchers are convinced that once it hits the market, it will be a tool that will revolutionize the field of stroke care.
“It’s exciting to think how this app and emerging machine learning technology will help more patients identify stroke symptoms early on,” said Dr. Radoslav Raychev, a vascular neurologist at the UCLA School of Medicine. rapid and accurate diagnosis of symptoms is imperative to ensure that people with stroke survive and regain independence. We hope that implementing this app will change lives and change the field of stroke care,” said Dr. Radoslav Raychev, a vascular neurologist at the UCLA School of Medicine.
