Revolutionizing Film Production: How “The Volume” in Fallout Series Changed the Game

Computer effects in films and series are now ubiquitous; we’ve gotten used to them. However, there are fans out there who are not happy with CGI.

And then came The Mandalorian and quietly revolutionized filmmaking with “The Volume” – a huge LED wall.

Lucky for film fans, because the Fallout series used exactly this technology during filming to bring the wasteland to life.

This is “The Volume”

Simply put: The Volume is a 360-degree virtual big screen. It surrounds the stage on which the actors stand. In contrast to a green screen, the actors do not act in a vacuum.

The technical data can be summarized quite quickly:

  • The screen consists of 1,326 independent LED panels.
  • The largest single screen is curved and 6 meters high.
  • The main display is a 260 degree semi-circular LED wall.
  • Screens on the ceiling and at the transitions between the wall and ceiling transform The Volume into a virtual space.
  • The entrance consists of two hanging screens. These are lowered during rotation, creating a 360-degree dome.

What is the advantage over green screen?

Sea Unit-LED There are some significant advantages for filmmakers.

scenery

In principle, any type of environment can be thrown onto the screens. In the case of Fallout, this was, among other things, Vault 33, from which the main character Lucy comes. Most of it was shot under a video dome to capture the shallows of the Vault.

This is how it is with green screen: Filming require the construction of physical sets on location, which are then applied with computer effects in post-production. This is expensive and time-consuming and can, depending on the situation, appear inauthentic.

Lighting conditions

The LED screens create light sources that automatically illuminate the scene. If the sun shines from above in the wasteland, the light automatically comes from above and gives the scene the correct lighting.

This is how it is with green screen: When shooting green screens, the green background must be removed in post-production and then the actual background must be reassembled. If the light sources are not set correctly, the result will look cheap.

In this clip from The Mummy Returns you can see Dwayne Johnson as a CGI scorpion who looks like he’s made of plastic because the lighting effects don’t match the fires in the room.

In addition, green light can be reflected on actors or props. In the industry this is referred to as a “spill”.

More scope for the actors

When filming in The Volume, the actors are able to deliver high quality performances because they are in the same environment as their characters.

At the same time, real-time monitoring allows actors to see their performance and make adjustments.

The actors from the Fallout series rave about the video dome. In interviews they find words of praise for The Volume.

Ella Purnell, actress of Lucy

Jonah (Jonathan Nolan, showrunner, editor’s note) likes to make everything look as real as possible. For this reason, a green screen was rarely used. When we shot The Volume, it was my first time standing in front of the camera using this StageCraft technique. An exciting experience.

From interviews with the Amazon cast

Aaron Morten, actor of Maximus

A studio with floor-to-ceiling, interconnected and camera-connected monitors surrounding the entire room makes an actor’s job easier. Unlike looking at a blank blue or green screen, your eyes can
work with visual images.

From interviews with the Amazon cast

Kyle MacLachlan, portrayer of Warden Hank

The Vault with a wonderful old charm and a feeling of authenticity was created using The Volume technique. […] This technique allowed us to work as actors, which made our work much easier compared to a typical green screen environment. We had this great visual environment to help us work. This was incredibly helpful.

From interviews with the cast of Amazon

This is how it is with green screen: In this case, actors act in a vacuum. For example, they have to imagine a counterpart when interacting with a CGI character. Everything around them is often green.

One of the most famous examples of how green screen destroyed the magic of cinema is the statement of Sir Ian McKellen, who was very unhappy when Gandalf was filming alone Hobbit-Movie having to act.

Fallout, the series, will be released in this country on April 11, 2024 exclusively on Amazon. You can find the trailer below.
