Revolutionary Window Coating Blocks Heat-Generating Light, Researchers Say

Keep heat out with paint. A lot of research has already been done and experimented with. This often concerns white paint that reflects sunlight. American scientists have now come up with a window coating that… blocks heat-generating ultraviolet and infrared light.

Researchers from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore in turn discovered – what they say is the first time on a large scale – that ‘cool coatings’ Being able to achieve 1.5 degrees heat savings in cities.

Both methods save on air conditioning costs. ‘Just like polarized sunglasses, our coating reduces the intensity of the incoming light. But unlike sunglasses, our coating remains clear and effective even when you tilt it at different angles,” explains Tengfei Luo, professor of energy studies at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana.

His research group produced a paint that both maintained transparency and lowered the temperature in a model room by 5.4 to 7.2 degrees Celsius, even when light was transmitted from a wide range of angles.

Urban Heat Island

The team from Nanyang Technological University states that ‘cool paint coatings contain additives that reflect the sun’s heat to reduce the absorption and emission of surface heat. They are also used to mitigate the Urban Heat Island effect, where urban areas experience warmer temperatures than surrounding areas.”

Most research into cool paint coatings is based on tests on scaled-down models, NTU claims. Effects in ‘the real world’ are therefore difficult to determine. The NTU workers have reportedly coated the roofs, walls and pavement of an industrial area in Singapore. They found that, compared to an adjacent uncoated area, the coated environment was up to two degrees Celsius cooler in the afternoon, while ‘the thermal comfort level’ for pedestrians improved by up to 1.5 degrees.

Lead author Kiran Kumar Donthu: ‘Our research provides evidence that cool paint coatings reduce heat build-up and contribute to cooling the urban environment. This is a minimally invasive urban cooling solution that has an immediate impact, compared to other options that often require major urban redevelopment.”

Last year we interviewed a painter who works extensively with white paint on roofs: Painting with sunglasses on.
