The idea is simple: you hang the laundry on a drying rack, turn on the motor and start spinning. Ans Clemens from Amsterdam invented the Speeddryer about 12 years ago. But how to bring such an invention to market was too much of a puzzle for her.
She enlisted the help of her niece Kim Hijkamp. “She was a bit stuck with the concept herself, so I started helping her,” Hijkamp told Editie NL. “We are now almost ready to sell the first copies.” According to Hijkamp, the rack actually works the same as a ‘normal’ drying rack. “You hang up the laundry and turn it on. The rotating motion dries the laundry in no time. It can be placed indoors or outdoors. Ideal for people with a small home. Of course, they prefer not to be surrounded by laundry.”
According to Hijkamp, the laundry not only dries quickly, it is also durable and cheap. “Running the drying rack for two hours costs less than five cents. A dryer costs much more.”
What does drying cost?
An old-fashioned condenser dryer uses almost three kilowatt hours of energy per drying cycle, which is equal to one euro and ten cents. A newer economical heat pump dryer uses more than a kilowatt hour. Which is equal to 36 cents.

According to Milieu Centraal, dryers are the biggest energy guzzlers in the home. “The new dryers are a bit more economical than the old ones, but they use an enormous amount of energy,” says Gwen Jansen Environment Central against Editie NL. “You also see that people find it important to use the dryer less. For the environment but also for their wallet.”
‘Set the dryer to eco mode’
“If you still want to use the dryer,” she continues. “It is wise to fill it completely and then let it run, use the eco mode and let it run during off-peak hours.”
According to Jansen, clothing also wears out faster when it dries in the dryer than on a clothes rack. “So that is also less sustainable.”
The Ans laundry rack is slightly more expensive than a standard rack. “We have now started pre-sales and you can order it for 160 euros. It will be on the market around April.”
