It was invented to prevent people from taking antibiotics in vain.
Scientists at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center have developed a smartphone app that uses artificial intelligence to determine whether a person has ear problems or not. For now, the program can indicate the presence or absence of two ailments: otitis media and an acquired infection. Study published in JAMA Pediatrics.
The user only needs to take a photo of the ear with the flashlight turned on and upload the image to the program. The AI is trained on about a thousand videos of ear cavities. Experts say their app is 93% accurate. The experiment showed that doctors determine the condition of the ears with an accuracy of 30 to 84%.
Most often (70%) children are susceptible to ear diseases. Doctors sometimes confuse infections or ear infections with fluid behind the ear or other conditions that are not caused by bacteria and do not respond to antimicrobial treatment. Then parents start giving their children antibiotics, but they don’t need them.
“Our tool helps make the right diagnosis and prescribe the right treatment,” say the study authors. The scientists clarified that their tool is “more accurate than the opinions of many doctors.” The application could potentially become a revolution in the primary health care system.
