Liputan6.com, Jakarta The world of agriculture still receives the attention of scientists. Not stopping at developing growth-supporting fertilizers, now researchers are presenting a unique breakthrough to speed up plant growth by giving them an electric shock. When electricity is applied, plants do not die from the shock, but the plants can grow faster.
This innovative idea goes beyond hydroponic plants to allow plant growth in limited space. One of the latest breakthroughs in the development of hydroponic farming Scientists call it eSoil, a substrate that combines efficient electrical conductivity with environmental sustainability.
Researchers from Linköping University in Sweden led the development of eSoil, a growing medium made from nanocellulose fibers and conductive polymers. ESoil is envisioned as an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional cultivation substrates, such as mineral wool, which require a lot of energy to produce and do not decompose easily.
In a 15-day laboratory test, cereal crops were grown in eSoil and compared with a control group using mineral wool. Plants in eSoil grow without stimulation for the first five days, then are given light electrical stimulation for the next five days before being harvested.
The results were as predicted. Here, Liputan6.com summarizes scientists’ findings that electric shock accelerates plant growth, reported by Pnas.org and New Atlas, Monday (1/1/2024).
