Nissan, which has a wide customer base both in Turkey and around the world, cooperates with Radi-Cool, one of the companies specialized in developing passive cooling products. With this collaboration with the Chinese company, paint will be kept that keeps the interior of cars cooler. This project, which started in 2021, was successful with the development and evaluation of more than 100 samples.

Nissan confirmed that the paint it tested was successful. When parked side by side in the sun, a freshly painted car became almost cool to the touch, with a 21.6 degree Fahrenheit drop in outside temperature. The interior temperature, which is critical for comfort and reducing air conditioning load, has been noted to be up to 9 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than in vehicles coated with conventional paint. This means that it will cool to a maximum of 12 degrees and to a minimum of 5 degrees.

Meta materials are used

In fact, the use of metamaterials is the key to the cooling properties of this paint.

Metamaterials are designed to have properties rarely seen in naturally occurring materials. A patch in Nissan’s new paint reflects near-infrared rays.

These rays usually cause vibration (at the molecular level) in normal car paint, which causes the paint to heat up. At the same time, a second piece creates electromagnetic waves that counteract the sun’s rays, directing heat away from the surface of the car and back into the atmosphere. In other words, it responds to the effect.

Although heat-reflective paint is widely used in other applications such as buildings, many must be applied with a roller. It also does not leave the same finish needed for a modern car. In these applications, there is no need for a transparent cover that is commonly used in cars. New Nissan paint can be applied with a spray gun.

Nissan continues to work to overcome this challenge and aims to offer it for special orders in different color options in the future.

The work done by the Japanese giant in this field is not limited to itself. While a team from Purdue University has developed a white paint with a solar reflection rate of 97.9 percent, other car manufacturers such as Toyota and Hyundai are working on the same projects. In other words, in the near future, even if cars are exposed to sunlight, these factors will not significantly affect their internal temperature.
