What is HADAR?
HADAR is an artificial intelligence assisted night vision system developed by Zubin Jacob and Fanglin Bao of Purdue University and their colleague Xin Zhou of Cornell University.
The system combines thermal physics, infrared imagery and machine learning to create high-quality night vision images.
Conventional thermal mapping systems work by detecting infrared radiation emitted by objects. However, this radiation can be scattered by atmospheric disturbances, resulting in images that are blurry and difficult to interpret.
HADAR addresses this problem by using machine learning to distinguish between the thermal radiation emitted by objects and the thermal radiation scattered by the atmosphere. This allows HADAR to create clear and detailed night vision images as if the object were illuminated by sunlight.
In addition to providing clear images, HADAR also provides depth information. This is important for applications such as autonomous vehicles, where the ability to estimate depth or distance is essential for safe navigation.
