FDA Approves New Nasal Spray Choice to EpiPen for Severe allergic Reactions

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.– A groundbreaking new treatment for severe allergic reactions has hit the market, offering an alternative to the traditional EpiPen. The FDA-approved nasal spray, known as Neffy,is now available for individuals suffering from life-threatening allergies, providing a needle-free option for emergency situations.
Neffy, which has already been prescribed to allergy sufferers in Huntsville, Alabama, is designed to reverse anaphylactic reactions quickly and effectively. While the EpiPen has long been the go-to treatment for such emergencies, the introduction of Neffy marks a significant shift in available options for patients.
Dr. Joseph Forester, a Huntsville-based allergist, has been prescribing Neffy to his patients. However, he notes that the traditional EpiPen remains the more commonly prescribed option. “it’s a positive development to have another treatment choice for those with severe allergies,” Dr. Forester said. “Having multiple options can make a real difference in how quickly and effectively we can respond to anaphylactic reactions.”
Historically, the EpiPen has been the primary tool for reversing anaphylactic reactions. However, pharmacy data from the previous year revealed that only half of the prescriptions for injector pens were actually filled. Dr. Forester hopes that the introduction of Neffy will encourage more people to carry a life-saving treatment with them.
“the concern has been that some people avoid administering their epinephrine when they need it, because of some needle phobia, or they’re afraid it might hurt,” Dr. Forester explained. “Delay in the use of epinephrine is known to be a risk factor for more severe reactions, so getting a treatment option that people will use when they should use it, well it’s nice to have options.”
Neffy is suitable for individuals weighing over 66 pounds, making it accessible to a wide range of patients. allergists have highlighted that the nasal spray can be more cost-effective and has a longer shelf life compared to the EpiPen. Additionally, its compact size makes it easier to carry, which could prove crucial in emergency situations.
Dr. Forester emphasized the importance of having multiple treatment options available. “whichever version a patient is prescribed, they should use when they need it, they’re both going to be effective,” he said. “But you know, indications are that there are people who will preferably use an intranasal spray over a needle option.”
The FDA approved Neffy in August, paving the way for its widespread use. As more allergists begin to prescribe the nasal spray, it is indeed expected to become a valuable tool in the fight against severe allergic reactions.

Exploring the New Nasal Spray Alternative to epipen: A Conversation with Dr. joseph Forester
In a notable growth for allergy treatment, the FDA has approved Neffy, a new nasal spray designed to combat severe allergic reactions. This groundbreaking alternative to the conventional EpiPen offers a needle-free option for individuals suffering from life-threatening allergies. We sat down with Dr. Joseph Forester, a Huntsville-based allergist, to discuss the implications of this new treatment and its potential impact on patients.
Introducing Neffy: A Needle-free Solution
Senior Editor: Dr. Forester, thank you for joining us today. The introduction of Neffy as a nasal spray alternative to the EpiPen is certainly a game-changer. Can you tell us more about how Neffy works and why it’s such a significant development?
Dr. Forester: Absolutely. Neffy is designed to reverse anaphylactic reactions quickly and effectively, much like the EpiPen. However, the key difference is that it’s a nasal spray, which eliminates the need for a needle. This can be particularly beneficial for individuals who may have a phobia of needles or are hesitant to use an injector pen in an emergency situation.
Addressing patient hesitation and Accessibility
Senior Editor: You mentioned that some patients avoid using their EpiPen due to needle phobia. How do you see Neffy addressing this issue?
Dr. Forester: That’s a great question. Historically, we’ve seen that only about half of the prescriptions for injector pens like the EpiPen are actually filled. This hesitation can be due to a variety of factors, including fear of needles or concerns about the potential pain associated with injection. Neffy provides a more accessible option that can encourage more people to carry a life-saving treatment with them. The fact that it’s a nasal spray makes it much less intimidating for some patients.
Comparing Neffy to the EpiPen
Senior editor: How does Neffy compare to the EpiPen in terms of effectiveness and practicality?
Dr. Forester: Both Neffy and the EpiPen are effective in reversing anaphylactic reactions. Though, Neffy has some advantages. It’s more cost-effective and has a longer shelf life compared to the EpiPen. Additionally, its compact size makes it easier to carry, which could be crucial in emergency situations. That said, the EpiPen remains the more commonly prescribed option, and both treatments have their place depending on the patient’s needs and preferences.
The Importance of Multiple treatment Options
Senior Editor: You’ve emphasized the importance of having multiple treatment options available. Can you expand on why this diversity is crucial?
Dr. Forester: Having multiple options is essential as it allows us to tailor treatment to the individual patient. Some people may prefer the intranasal spray over a needle option, while others may feel more agreeable with the traditional EpiPen. The key is that patients should use whichever treatment they have been prescribed when they need it. Both options are effective, and having a choice can make a real difference in how quickly and effectively we can respond to anaphylactic reactions.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Allergy Treatment
Senior Editor: The FDA approved Neffy in August, and it’s already being prescribed in Huntsville. What do you see as the future of allergy treatment with the introduction of Neffy?
Dr.forester: I believe Neffy will become a valuable tool in the fight against severe allergic reactions. As more allergists begin to prescribe the nasal spray, we’ll see an increase in the number of patients carrying life-saving treatments with them. This can only be a positive development, as it increases the likelihood of timely intervention and perhaps saves lives. The more options we have, the better equipped we are to handle these emergencies effectively.
Senior Editor: Dr. Forester, thank you for sharing your insights on this exciting new development in allergy treatment. It’s clear that Neffy has the potential to make a significant impact on how we manage severe allergic reactions.
Dr. Forester: My pleasure. It’s an exciting time in allergy treatment, and I’m glad we can offer more options to our patients.
