About the episode
If someone has a serious infection, it is of course important to quickly find out what the cause is. But with regular tests, that cause is not always found. And researchers at the LUMC have now come up with a solution.
They have developed a method that looks at the complete metagenome of a sample. The pieces of virus are then fished out with a kind of safety net and software puzzles them back together.
In this audio you can hear clinical virologist Jutte de Vries and PhD student and molecular biologist Ellen Carbo from the Leiden University Medical Center. Read more about the research here: Detecting disease-causing viruses from misunderstood infections via metagenome.
