Revolutionary find: 19 cannons found in an American river – Curious

AT warehouse by the river Savannah in USA historical treasures are preserved – 19 cannons, which according to the evidence have remained lost for more than 240 years. Researchers suspect the cannons were from British ships sunk to the bottom of the river during the US War of Independencethe Associated Press reported.

The mud and rust-covered cannons were discovered by accident. An excavator scooping up sludge from the riverbed last year as part of a project related to the Savannah, grabs one of the cannons with his metal jaws. The team will soon bring out two more.

Archaeologists have suggested the cannons are remnants of a Confederate warship discovered a few years earlier in the area, said Andrea Farmer, an archaeologist with the Army Corps of Engineers. Experts from Navy of USA however, they found that they did not coincide with any of the known cannons used during the The Civil War. Further research shows that the cannons are probably almost a century older and sank during the preparations for the bloody siege of Savannah in 1779 during The war for independence.

In just over a year 19 cannons have been removed from the same location, a few miles downstream Savannahwhere in 1733 was founded the last of the 13 American colonies of Great Britain Georgia.

“They are in remarkably good condition. Many of them were ‘buried’ in clay and covered with mud and debris that protected them,” Farmer said.

Now government officials USA i Great Britainas well as the state Georgiawork together on an agreement to preserve the newly discovered cannons before putting them on display.

The cannons are kept in water to prevent further deterioration while experts carefully clean them. Meanwhile, researchers are looking for more conclusive evidence linking the cannons to British ships from the time of The war for independence.

Andrea Farmer says experts are convinced in this regard. Savannah was under British siege for about a year until the autumn of 1779, when the colonizers planned an attack to retake the city with the help of French and Haitian allies.

According to Farmer, all stakeholders are working on an agreement to preserve the cannons and eventually exhibit them at the Historical Museum of Savannahwhich recreates the battlefield where the bloodiest battles were fought during the siege of 1779.

“Everyone wants these artifacts to stay in Savannahbecause it makes the most sense, ”he says Andrea Farmer.
