New milestone for the Cardiology Department of the Maria SS Addolorata Hospital in Eboli which acts as a reference point for the ASL Salerno for provincial cardiology. In the past few weeks, in fact, a highly complex procedure was performed for the implantation of two transcatheter prostheses that allow the correction of tricuspid valve insufficiency. Interventional procedure performed on a 76-year-old patient, affected by congestive heart failure secondary to severe tricuspid regurgitation and with a high surgical risk. The operation was performed by the director of Cardiology Michael Capasso and saw the collaboration of the team of haemodynamicists and ultrasound specialists, through anesthesiological assistance and thanks to the support of the entire cardiology department.
When the tricuspid valve does not close properly, in fact, the reflux of the vena cava causes congestion of the viscera and cardiac failure in the patient. When possible, the valve defect is corrected with an “open heart” surgery, but in some cases it cannot be tolerated by the patient due to the high surgical risk.
«The surgery lasted about an hour. – explains Dr. Michele Capasso -. It has allowed to reduce the effects of tricuspid insufficiency on the heart and systemic circulation. The implant does not require any surgical incision, so our patient was able to leave the hospital after only a few days of hospitalization.». The technique, for which a correct evaluation is necessary that cannot ignore a multidisciplinary approach in Heart Team, involves the implantation of two bovine pericardium prostheses sutured onto a nitinol stent at the level of the superior vena cava and the inferior vena cava, using the femoral vein as an access route, therefore without the traditional open heart operation.
