Revolutionary 3D Printing Surgery at NMC Royal Hospital: Jaw Joint Replacement for Arab Woman

Saeed Ahmed (Sharjah) A surgical team at NMC Royal Hospital in Sharjah performed a recent surgery using 3D printing technology, which included replacing the jaw joint of a 38-year-old Arab woman, who had been suffering for years from a disease of erosion and collapse of the jaw joints. Eating due to severe pain and distortion of the teeth, as well as negatively affecting the appearance of her face.

Dr. Pramod Subash at the hospital said: The temporomandibular joint plays a vital role in the functions of opening the mouth, chewing and speaking, and replacing it can contribute significantly to improving the patient’s life and quality, pointing out that total replacement of the jaw joint is necessary in diseases and deformities that cause severe pain in oral functions, and these cases can also be caused by jaw wear as a result of age, infection, accidents, tumors, or autoimmune diseases.

He added that the technology of 3D printing organs is a qualitative leap in the field of surgery and medicine, and enables doctors to design and manufacture custom human parts that are compatible with the patient’s structure, pointing out that this technological innovation contributes to improving surgical results and reducing the risks of traditional surgical interventions.

Dr. Pramod stressed that the success of the patient, Marwa, is an inspiring example of how modern technology is used in medicine to improve people’s lives and restore hope and smiles to their faces.
