Surgeons at the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam speak of a revolution now that they can use virtual reality glasses for lung cancer operations. In a video from NOS, heart and lung surgeon Lex Maat talks about the new technique, which has turned out to be very successful. According to him, they can operate in a much more targeted way with the help of glasses and healthy lung tissue is spared as much as possible.

According to Maat, the anatomy of the lungs is different in almost every patient. The new technique is used when small pieces of tumor have to be removed. “You only remove the sick part, so much more healthy lung tissue remains.”
Absolute Revolution
The surgeon speaks of “an absolute revolution in diagnostics”, he tells NOS. “Previously we had to reconstruct the course of the blood vessels slice by slice in our head to get a bit of an idea of how it is three-dimensional. With the VR glasses I can, as it were, walk through the lung, see exactly where the tumor is located. I can now go straight for the target and just isolate and remove the diseased tissue. “
