A Technical Feat: restoring the Steel Roof
The restoration of the shaft box involves a complex and innovative approach.The entire steel roof construction will be carefully detached and transported in parts to a specialized workshop at the end of March. There, under the supervision of immovable heritage experts, the steel will undergo restoration, and the necessary facilities for the future skylounge will be integrated.
The re-assembly of the renewed roof construction is planned for the end of the year. Mayor Borremans describes this process as a technical feat.
He explains, By restoring the roof in a workshop, it becomes possible to work with the utmost precision and to maintain the authenticity of the shaft box to the maximum.

The project extends beyond the shaft box itself. the former reception building is also undergoing a complete change. It will serve a dual purpose, housing both a museum space and modern office spaces. The museum will offer visitors a view of the original Skip installation, while the office spaces will be occupied by organizations such as VDAB.
A panoramic lift will provide access to the top of the shaft box for disabled individuals and former miners. The catering establishment is located in the Skylounge on the top of the shaft box, with a breathtaking view of the mining region,
says Mayor Borremans. The shaft box of Zolder Mine will be the only one in the province where this is possible.
Financial Support and Economic boost
The total cost of the project, amounting to €15.7 million, is supported by significant subsidies. Immovable Heritage Flanders is contributing €3.7 million, LRM is investing €1 million, and the municipality is receiving €2.2 million from the European Union in the form of ERDO support for economic re-use. The remaining costs are being covered by the local management of Heusden-Zolder.
