This is not surprising, as it has already been suggested in the past that the release is still a long way off. Nevertheless, EA Sports College Football has become very quiet lately – a cause for concern?
Not at all, says publisher Electronic Arts in the person of CEO Andrew Wilson at a recent financial briefing. Accordingly, the development team of EA Sports College Football have made “some incredible progress”.
He continued: “The team is doing an amazing job of building the future of college football. The gameplay really fits together and captures all the action from the glamorous happenings and the differences of college football compared to the NFL. I have a lot of faith in it what the team does.”
Prior to the release, hard work will be done on the licensing situation, as Wilson further emphasizes. At the present time, many of the most important colleges are actually on board via license agreements, but the end is far from over. We will continue to work with various collegiate sport officials across the country, as well as with third-party partners, to find solutions to help collegiate athletes find their way into the game. But Wilson believes there will be “an incredible return of the college football experience” in the end, and athletes won’t be left out either.
Announced in early 2021, EA Sports College Football continues the earlier series. The college football series started in 1993 with Bill Walsh College Football before it developed into the long-standing successful NCAA Football series. A lack of licenses, the illegal use of image and name rights and a lack of remuneration for the athletes depicted ultimately led to the end of the franchise – but now EA wants to do it better.
This could also happen at EA Sports College Football as part of a live service model in the future, because it cannot be ruled out that college athletes will only gradually be licensed and then find their way to the title. The title could therefore receive regular updates rather than a new spin-off every year like Madden NFL does.
