Video

Life in the country seems idyllic, but in the absence of the minimum conditions, the villages located in areas broken as if from Heaven depopulate from year to year. With dirt streets, no sewage, shops or pharmacies, many have become towns with a past, but no future. However, a few hamlets have found the recipe for success and offer conditions that attract new residents.

A narrow, cobbled road takes you to a fairytale land. In the village of Chiliu, Gorj, only 30 houses are still standing. Some built recently by those who felt that the area could have tourist potential. Only the guests are missing…

From populated communes to abandoned villages

Over the hill, another hamlet is struggling to survive.. Rătez was, in the old days, a commune. It had a bank, town hall, school, pharmacy and shops. Now it has only ruins, in a gorgeous autumnal landscape. And on the streets, you rarely see a single person.

Diana Speretoiu, Observer reporter: Tens of generations of children studied in this school. Now you can barely see it because of the brambles and chaotically grown trees.

Local woman: Look at the foundation, it’s there. The school, from the school up, all the houses are deserted. The children each settled in Bucharest, all over the country.

Diana Speretoiu, Observer reporter: Once an emblematic building, now the bank at the top of the hill has its days numbered. It’s not long until it becomes one with the earth. The roof has already caved in, the doors have long been broken, and the walls are falling brick by brick.

The rest now live on memories

Their hope is to see asphalt at the gate as well, instead of gravel. The authorities promise to start the works with money from the Ministry of Development. It could be a first step to convince others to return to their native village. A village in Hunedoara found the recipe to stop depopulation. Even though in recent years, hundreds of locals have left for the city, the area has started to become attractive, thanks to the conditions.

Horia Flavius Jurcă, mayor of Blajeni: We have this part of the infrastructure, electricity, fiber for telephony. Generally, when they bought these properties, they took an interest and found this area to be right for them.

More than 50 households found new owners. The price of the houses is between 10 thousand and 20 thousand euros. In Romania, 126 localities were completely abandoned.
